Southern Province Socialist Party (SP) Chairperson Kelvin Chikwata has categorically disputed charges made by Economic Front (EF) Party President Wynter Kabimba that his party promotes homosexuality.
During an interview with Byta FM Zambia News, Chikwata highlighted that both the SP President and Vice President are straight men who are happily married to women. He underlined that this reality makes the charge that the party is supporting the homosexual agenda ridiculous.
Chikwata further clarified that while the SP welcomes individuals from all walks of life, including those who identify as homosexuals, the party does not actively advocate for any particular sexual orientation.
It is a party that aims to represent and include everyone. In contrast, Economic Front President Wynter Kabimba had alleged that the Socialist Party endorses homosexuality, citing the party’s acceptance of homosexual party members as evidence of this stance.
The issue of homosexuality has been a contentious topic in Zambia. Notably, in the lead-up to the Summit For Democracy, some members of the opposition Patriotic Front party had urged President Hichilema not to meet with US Vice President Kamala Harris, alleging that she intended to pressure the president with a gay rights agenda.
Additionally, a Zambian gay man who sought to visit the country with his partner had to formally request permission from the government before being allowed entry. This incident highlights the ongoing discussions and debates surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Zambia.
