Nigeria’s pioneer chartered accountant dies at 104

Pa Akintola Williams, the doyen of accounting, has passed away at the age of 104. He peacefully passed in his sleep during the early hours of Monday, September 11, 2023.

Akintola was widely recognized as Nigeria’s first indigenous chartered accountant and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the country’s accounting profession.

Having been born in 1919, he dedicated his life to developing Nigeria’s financial sector. After studying accounting at the University of London, he became a qualified chartered accountant in 1947.


Upon returning to Nigeria, he founded his accounting firm, Akintola Williams & Co., which has since become Deloitte & Touche, in 1952.

Alongside his successful career, Williams championed the growth of the accounting profession in Nigeria.


He was one of the founding members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and served as its president from 1963 to 1965.

Additionally, he was a member of the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.


Williams received numerous accolades and honors throughout his illustrious career, including the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the Nigerian National Order.

His contributions to the field of accounting and his commitment to advancing the profession in Nigeria will forever be remembered and cherished.
