Stephanie Naya Isuma aka Calabar Chic was (Born on June 10, 1992), in Port Harcourt, Rivers State into a household of six children. She is the second of two children and the only girl.  Calabar Chic’s parents’ identities are unknown, but she describes them as hardworking and supportive. Her father is an engineer, while her mother is an entrepreneur.

Calabar Chic attended Jireh Education Centre for her primary education. El-Emmanuels Academy was where she completed her secondary school. She later gained admission into the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka and majored in Mass Communication. She also graduated from the Delyork Creative Academy Film School in Lagos with a degree in Film Editing.

Stephanie Naya Isuma had no plans to become an actress, either. Her first part as an actor came about by chance, she claims. On the day it happened, she was due to give a script to the director, Lancelot Imasuen, who desperately needed an actor. She was cast based on her professional expertise and contributions to previous film productions. Calabar Chic has appeared in Jimi Bendel (2016), The Jimi Bendel Show (2018), and Fate of Alakada (2020).

Calabar Chic has spoken about her sexual assault experience as a 14-year-old girl and how it damaged her relationship with God.

During a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the sketch creator disclosed that the incident occurred on her way home from church and that she had stopped attending church for 17 years.

Calabar Chic described comedy as therapy and an escape from her hardships.

She said: “I had a really tough time growing up, and I have been running away from my problems my whole life.

“So comedy was just an escape. At some point, it became a form of healing. I do these things to make people laugh, but I do it for myself. When I make people laugh, it makes me happy.

“Growing up as a 14-year-old, I was sexually assaulted, brutalized, beaten, and the guy had his way with me. I was just a teenager, returning from church the evening this happened.

“My relationship with God just went down, and I did not attend church for seventeen years.”

Calabar Chic’s kidnap

Calabar Chic was abducted on January 8, 2018, by armed men thought to be herders. Fortunately, she was released after five days in detention.

She said: “I was kidnapped in 2018 by a Fulani Herdsman. I was driving with a friend, and when we got to the Benin Bypass, these guys just blocked the road and started shooting in the air.

“They took us into the bush and left us till the next day. Then they told us they were kidnappers and we had to pay N50 million ransom or they would kill us. They had us for five days.


“The guy that I travelled with, they slashed him with a dagger. I prayed to God that if he got me out of there, I would go back to church, they freed us after we paid the ransom.”
