Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), recounted an incident in which he was attacked by alleged thugs in Imo state.
Ajaero claimed that after being apprehended by the police in Owerri, the capital city of Imo state, he was handed over to a group of seven thugs who assaulted him and treated him like a common criminal.
During a press conference in Abuja on Friday, November 10, the NLC president shared his account of the incident.
He mentioned that prior to their arrival in the state for a protest the previous week, the NLC had sent letters to every security agency.
Ajaero further stated that workers who arrived at the protest venue around 7 am were violently attacked by thugs who also confiscated their mobile phones.
Ajaero disclosed that he arrived at the scene around 9 am after receiving reports about the attacks on the workers.
He said: “I can’t explain the beating I received. They tied my hands and dragged me on the floor like a common criminal.”
Ajaero said he is not a card-carrying member of any political party as alleged.
