Judge Mary Kay Holthus of the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas was met with violence on Wednesday, January 3, while delivering a sentence for felony battery.
30-year-old Deobra Redden, the defendant being sentenced, forcibly broke free and violently attacked the judge, bringing her to the ground.
Despite Redden’s lawyer advocating for probation, Judge Holthus remained firm in her decision.
After commenting that Redden needed to “get a taste of something else,” the defendant leaped over the bench and assaulted the judge, causing chaos in the courtroom.
Prompt intervention from several individuals, including the bailiff, ensued as they restrained Redden amid screams and scuffles.
Some individuals even managed to strike Redden before the chaotic incident finally ended.
According to sources from 8 News Now, Judge Holthus hit her head during the terrifying attack but ultimately remained unharmed. Redden has a history of previous offenses.
In November, Redden pleaded guilty to making threats to harm a man’s kneecaps in April, causing “substantial bodily harm.” Following a missed court appearance in December, Holthus issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
