JUST IN: Tragedy as University students die after looting rice

Three students from Nasarawa State University, Keffi tragically lost their lives on Friday while attempting to loot rice that was being distributed by the state government.

The students were involved in a stampede at the convocation square where the rice was being stored, waiting for Governor Abdullahi Sule to begin the distribution.

Despite security personnel trying to control the crowd, the students overwhelmed them and caused a stampede.

Some students managed to grab bags of rice and flee before the distribution event began.

Police officers are now trying to retrieve the stolen palliatives from the students.

A source said:

“Some of the students were struggling with the police over the rice and as more students got information, the situation degenerated.“As we speak, some students are injured and receiving treatment at the school clinic,” the source said.

Recall that the governor recently embarked on a palliative initiative for students of tertiary institutions in the state.

He had visited Federal University, Lafia, College of Education, Akwanga among others where he distributed 7.5 kg bags of rice and N5,000 to each students.
