Andy Murray, the two-time Olympic gold medallist, has opted to withdraw from the singles tennis event at the Paris Olympics due to his ongoing recovery from back surgery.
However, he will still be competing in the doubles competition alongside Dan Evans.
Despite not being fully fit, Andy Murray is determined to pursue another medal in the men’s doubles event, viewing it as a final opportunity before retiring after his fifth Olympic Games.
“I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” said the 37-year-old.
“Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”
His previous Olympic successes include gold in singles at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, as well as a silver in mixed doubles in 2012 with Laura Robson.
Murray’s decision to focus on doubles means his last singles match was a brief second-round appearance at Queen’s Club last month, where he was forced to withdraw due to a spinal cyst.
