Miley Cyrus is currently facing a lawsuit for copyright infringement related to her 2023 hit single ‘Flowers’.
The legal action comes from Tempo Music Investments, who claim that the melody, harmony, and chorus of the song were taken from Bruno Mars’ 2012 hit ‘When I Was Your Man’.
Although the lyrics of ‘Flowers’ are similar to Bruno’s song, they are not identical enough to require him to be credited as a co-writer.
Miley Cyrus’s chorus goes: “I can buy myself flowers.
“Write my name in the sand.
“Talk to myself for hours.
“Say things you don’t understand.
“I can take myself dancing.
“And I can hold my own hand.
“Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”
Bruno sings on his track: “That I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand … Now my baby’s dancin’, but she’s dancin’ with another man.”
Tempo Music Investments is not only seeking monetary damages from Miley but also wants her to be prohibited from performing the song in the future.
Bruno Mars is not involved in the lawsuit against Miley. ‘Flowers’ was a track on Miley’s album ‘Endless Summer Vacation’ and was rumored to be inspired by her ex-husband, actor Liam Hemsworth.
Commenting on the hit’s global success, Miley Cyrus tweeted at the time: “Celebrating “Flowers” being #1 around the world again this week! I love that this record is connecting in such a positive way and it’s a pleasure to continue creating music for you. These milestones are only made possible by the listeners and my incredible fans. Endlessly thankful. (sic)”
