Will Chelsea’s Chaos Cost Pochettino His Chance to Manage Team USA

Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is about to take over as manager of the United States men’s national team, but his previous position has caused issues.

Pochettino, who led Chelsea to sixth place in the Premier League last season, left after receiving a £10 million pay-off.

Although this severance package hindered his relocation to the United States, talkSPORT can now certify that it will have no financial impact on his new employment.

According to August reports, Pochettino has verbally agreed to replace Gregg Berhalter, who was fired after the United States’ early withdrawal from the 2024 Copa America.

Meanwhile, Pochettino previously worked with U.S. sporting director Matt Crocker during his time at Southampton and will now lead the team into the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

The 52-year-old Argentine is drawn to the prospect of managing the U.S. team through the World Cup and the Olympics, as well as lucrative sponsorship opportunities.

This will be Pochettino’s first stint managing a national team, having been linked to the England job following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024.
