FIFA has announced plans to review its regulations on player status and transfers following a significant ruling by the European Court of Justice involving former Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra.
In 2014, Diarra ended his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow but was unable to join Belgian club Charleroi due to FIFA’s intervention, leading to a legal battle. After a year out of football, Diarra eventually signed with Olympique Marseille, sparking a debate over FIFA‘s control of transfer regulations.
The ruling in Diarra’s favor highlighted a potential shift in how players’ contractual rights are managed, prompting the organization’s Director of Legal Services, Emilio Garcia Silvero, to announce that the organization will engage with stakeholders to update the transfer system for the benefit of players and clubs.
