The House of Representatives has rejected the National Honour bestowed upon Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, asserting that President Bola Tinubu exhibited discrimination against the House by awarding a superior honour to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
It is pertinent to recall that on Tuesday, Tinubu proclaimed the conferment of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) upon Akpabio and Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere Ekun, while Abbas and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
Subsequent to a motion of urgent public significance introduced by Philip Agbese on Wednesday, the House resolved that the Representatives are not subordinate to Senators; thus, both leaders ought to receive equitable treatment.
The motion, endorsed by 360 members of the House, advocated for the elimination of the designations “upper chamber and lower chamber,” emphasizing that both chambers are of equal standing.
