Nigerian music producer and executive, Michael Collins Ajereh, widely known as Don Jazzy, has shared what inspired his journey into music production.
In a recent appearance on the ‘On The Grind’ podcast, Don Jazzy explained that his passion for music drove him to pursue a career as a producer.
Highlighting his skill with various musical instruments, particularly the drums, the Mavin Records founder humorously mentioned that he could even drum during intimate moments.
He also shared that he lived in the studio for two years with fellow producers Altims and Baby Fresh.
Don Jazzy’s career began in the UK, where he worked with JJC and the 419 Squad. In 2004, he co-founded Mo’ Hits Records with D’banj and took on the role of the label’s in-house producer. After Mo’ Hits disbanded, he established Mavin Records in 2012, where he serves as CEO and lead producer.
Additionally, Don Jazzy was an in-house producer for Kanye West’s GOOD Music from 2011 to 2013.
“I just went in [to production] and never looked back. I finished playing percussion, I moved to jazz drum. From the drum set, I moved the bass guitar. At some point, I started learning the piano,” he said.
“I started learning more instruments when I was in London and I realised that I wanted to be a producer. But originally, I liked playing drums and bass guitar…. I literally drum all the time. I do it during sex. I can even drum on a woman’s buttocks if I get the inspiration for a beat at that time.”
