Former Liverpool star Joel Matip retires from football at 33

Former Liverpool and Cameroon defender Joël Matip has formally declared his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.

As verified by the Reds, Matip transitioned to Liverpool in 2016 via a free transfer from Schalke 04 and enjoyed eight prosperous years at Anfield, competing under the tutelage of manager Jürgen Klopp.

Throughout his tenure with the Reds, Matip was instrumental in the acquisition of significant trophies, including the 2019 UEFA Champions League, the 2020 Premier League championship, an FA Cup, and two Carabao Cups.

His concluding appearance occurred against Sheffield United last year, during which he sustained a severe ACL injury that rendered him unavailable for subsequent matches.

Matip officially bid farewell to Liverpool supporters at Anfield on the concluding day of the last season, prior to the expiration of his contract.

In addition to his club accomplishments, he has earned 27 caps for the Cameroon national team and represented his country in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

His retirement signifies the conclusion of a distinguished playing career at both club and international echelons.
