Cassper Nyovest, also known as Refiloe Phoolo, ignited controversy by challenging maskandi artist Mthandeni Manqele to a boxing match.
The challenge was prompted by Cassper’s public disappointment with the SAMAs, where Tyla’s hit Water failed to win Record of the Year despite her global success.
“No way, Tyla won a Grammy, but not the SA MA for Record of the Year. Y’all are playing games,” Cassper Nyovest tweeted.
Mthandeni fired back on social media, mocking Cassper as “one of those hip hop boys in baggy pants” who’s looking for attention.
He added confidently, “I’ll beat him up!”
Cassper later clarified his comments, apologizing if he offended Mthandeni.
“I meant no disrespect. I’m not the tough-guy type, but I do love boxing. So if you want to go there, we can,” Cassper wrote.
Mthandeni, who had just celebrated a SAMA win for his track Paris, expressed mixed feelings, noting that he would have celebrated on stage if he had received the news while performing.
