JUST IN: Supreme Court nullifies National Lottery Act

Supreme Court nullifies National Lottery Act

The National Lottery Act 2005 enacted by the National Assembly has been nullified by the Supreme Court in a unanimous judgement on Friday.

The ruling, which came after a suit was filed in 2008 by Lagos and other states, stated that the National Assembly did not have the authority to legislate on lottery and games of chance.

The court declared that such powers belong exclusively to the state Houses of Assembly.

Therefore, the National Lottery Act 2005 is no longer enforceable in all states, except the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Justice Mohammed Idris delivered the lead judgment.
