Three La Liga football fans have been apprehended in Spain for their involvement in the racist harassment directed at Barcelona players Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde during the recent Clasico against Real Madrid, as reported by Spanish law enforcement on Saturday.
The two adult suspects and one minor are alleged to have engaged in “xenophobic remarks that undermined the dignity and moral integrity of the two athletes” during the match, which concluded with Barcelona’s victory of 4-0 in Madrid, according to police statements.
The suspects were identified through the analysis of mobile phone and television recordings.
Post-match, videos surfaced on social media depicting racial abuse directed at the Barcelona players, particularly targeting 17-year-old Spanish talent Yamal during a goal celebration, marking him as the youngest scorer in Clasico history.
Spanish football is facing significant challenges in addressing racism within stadiums nationwide.
Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has emerged as a prominent advocate in the battle against racism and has encountered multiple incidents of abuse since his arrival in Spain in 2018.
The Brazilian winger garnered international support in May 2023 when he confronted Valencia supporters following an incident of abuse at their Mestalla stadium.
In June, three Valencia supporters received an eight-month prison sentence as a consequence of their actions.
In January 2023, an effigy dressed in a Vinicius shirt was discovered hanging from a bridge adjacent to the club’s training facility, accompanied by a banner proclaiming: “Madrid hates Real.”
