‘It is a whole institutional issue’ – Tunji-Ojo speaks on Bobrisky’s prison saga

Nigerian govt declares Tuesday, Wednesday public holidays for Eid-il-Fitr

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has characterized the controversy surrounding popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, as indicative of institutional challenges in the country.

Tunji-Ojo made this statement during an interview on Tuesday’s episode of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Bobrisky has been at the center of a scandal involving allegations of bribery and misuse of funds.

In a widely circulated audio recording, the cross-dresser claimed to have paid off officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service for preferential treatment while in prison.

The Interior minister emphasized that the prolonged discussion of this incident underscores broader institutional shortcomings.

“When you have an institutional problem, you don’t just provide a knee-jerk approach to solving it.

“We set up that committee to look into all the issues, beyond Bobrisky, beyond people absconding – it is a whole institutional issue,” he said.

According to him, reforming Nigeria’s institutions is the way forward in resolving similar issues that may occur in the future.

“We cannot transfer today’s problem to the future,” the minister said.
