FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday, Commends Nigerian Workers for Driving National Growth

FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday to Mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has announced Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of this year’s International Workers’ Day, recognizing the contributions of workers across the country.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in an official statement released through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

In the message, the minister extended congratulations to Nigerian workers, acknowledging their continued role in sustaining the country’s economic and social development. He highlighted the resilience and dedication shown by workers across various sectors, noting that their efforts remain central to Nigeria’s progress.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the annual celebration serves not just as a day off, but as a moment to reflect on the importance of labor in nation-building. He described the workforce as a critical pillar in driving productivity and long-term prosperity.

He also encouraged workers to remain committed to values such as patriotism, diligence, and professionalism, stressing that these qualities are essential for achieving sustainable national development.

Beyond commendation, the minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to improving working conditions. He assured that efforts are ongoing to enhance the welfare and security of workers while creating an environment that supports economic growth and job stability.

Workers’ Day, marked globally on May 1, traditionally honors the achievements of labor movements and provides an opportunity for governments and organizations to address workplace challenges and reforms.

In Nigeria, the public holiday is typically observed with organized labor activities, including rallies and engagements led by unions and worker associations, although the tone of each year’s celebration often reflects current economic realities.

This year’s declaration reinforces the government’s recognition of the workforce as a key driver of national advancement, while also placing renewed focus on the policies and commitments needed to support them.
