The legal team representing Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, has outlined specific conditions for the release of human rights attorney, Dele Farotimi.
Babalola’s legal representatives indicated that Farotimi will attain freedom upon substantiating the defamatory claims made against the Senior Advocate.
During a press conference held in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, his attorneys, Owoseni Ajayi, Olakanmi Falade, and Lawrence Fasanmi, revealed this information on Friday.
The lawyers clarified that Babalola has formally requested the Police to conduct an investigation into the defamatory accusations Farotimi articulated in his publication entitled ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’.
They elucidated that the decision to pursue legal action against Farotimi by the law enforcement body was pursuant to ensuring the law is duly upheld regarding this issue.
Ajayi articulated that the purpose of the press conference was to rectify several misleading narratives surrounding the ongoing proceedings involving the Nigeria Police Force and Farotimi.
He said, “All facts are verifiable. I urge Nigerians to verify and find out what the truth is first before picking a side.
“Is it wrong for Aare Afe Babalola to seek justice for these false utterances against him? Should justice only be available to Mr Dele Farotimi because Aare Afe Babalola is a global icon?
“Once Mr Dele Farotimi can show proof that his assertions in the book are true, then he will be free.
“The law allows free speech, but not one that is calculated to injure the good reputation of another.”
