The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed Dogara, has reaffirmed the scheme’s zero-tolerance policy for protests and indiscipline among corps members. During a recent visit to the temporary orientation camp in Kaduna, he stressed the importance of discipline, reminding corps members to adhere to the NYSC bylaws, which clearly outline the repercussions of misconduct.
Warnings Against Indiscipline and Protests
Dogara revealed that several corps members faced disciplinary actions in the past three months due to attempted protests. He compared the NYSC’s strict stance to that of military and police institutions, stating:
“In NYSC, just like in the Army and the Police, we don’t allow protest because we are disciplined and law-abiding.”
Safety Concerns Over Night Journeys
The DG expressed serious concerns about corps members engaging in night journeys, which he described as hazardous due to risks of accidents and kidnappings. He urged members to prioritize safety, citing instances where night travel resulted in fatalities or unresolved kidnappings.
“My concern has been these incessant night journeys that have claimed so many lives. Sometimes they are involved in accidents and some other times kidnapping and we never recover them,” Dogara said.
Corps Members’ Allowance Increased to N77,000
Dogara announced a significant increase in corps members’ monthly allowance, from N33,000 to N77,000, following approval from the government. He assured me that the raise would reflect soon, pending the completion of the cash-backing processes.
“This time, the government has agreed to double the amount from N33,000 to N77,000,” he confirmed.
NYSC’s Commitment to Corps Members’ Welfare
The DG emphasized the scheme’s commitment to the security and welfare of corps members and highlighted the NYSC’s proactive measures to address challenges they faced during their service year.
This announcement reinforces the NYSC’s focus on discipline, safety, and welfare as key priorities for the successful implementation of the scheme.
