A Chief Magistrate’s Court situated in Ado Ekiti has approved a bail amount of N30 million for the human rights attorney, Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi, who was placed in a correctional facility in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, arrived at the Magistrate Court grounds at approximately 9:45 am on Friday, surrounded by a substantial security presence.
As depicted in a widely circulated video clip, the human rights attorney was transported to the court premises via a prison van with a police escort, disembarking while raising his hands in gratitude to the enthusiastic crowd gathered outside the court
During the previous court session, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun had postponed the ruling on the bail application until December 20 (today) and mandated that the activist remain in custody.
Farotimi had entered a plea of not guilty to the 14-count indictment lodged against him by the Ekiti State Police.
His attorney, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, had also submitted a preliminary objection requesting the court to dismiss the charges.
He contended that the charges presented to the court were not recognized under the law and asserted that the offense of defamation is not acknowledged within the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
