Mother of Queen Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has been left in tears after her daughter spent Christmas in prison.
On Tuesday, a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, ordered the remand of Silekunola and others over the stampede that occurred on December 18 at a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
According to the police, 35 minors died in the stampede, while six others were critically injured.
The magistrate ordered that Silekunola, Oriyomi Hamzat, the founder and chief executive officer of Agidigbo FM, and Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Oyo State director of public prosecutions.
The defendants are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder and negligent acts causing harm.
The prosecution alleged that the trio contributed to the stampede that turned the Christmas celebration into a tragedy.
On Wednesday, however, a video posted on Silekunola’s Instagram page showed her mother weeping and begging the former Ife queen to be released.
She sympathised with all who lost loved ones in the stampede, adding that Silekunola knew nothing about it.
