Mathias Pogba, the brother of professional football player Paul Pogba, has been given a three-year prison sentence for his involvement in a blackmail scheme targeting his brother.
Mathias was arrested in late 2022 for his role in attempting to extort £11 million from the former Manchester United star.
A court in Paris handed down the sentence on Thursday, with two years of the three-year term suspended. Mathias, 34, will spend the remaining year under electronic monitoring instead of behind bars.
Paul Pogba, 31, informed authorities that a group of childhood friends, including his brother Mathias, had demanded money for “protection services” that stretched back 13 years.
The blackmail had such a significant impact on him that Pogba reportedly contemplated retiring from professional football in 2023.
