The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has enacted the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law.
This legislation presents a thorough strategy aimed at addressing the challenges within the energy sector and is anticipated to establish a foundation for economic and industrial advancement in Lagos.
The governor executed the signing of the bill on Tuesday at the Lagos House in Ikeja.
“The bill signifies a significant advancement by the state government to guarantee a 24-hour electricity supply to every area of the state, subsequent to the Federal Government’s authorization for states to generate and distribute energy in 2023,” stated the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, on X.
This initiative is projected to diminish the state’s reliance on the national power grid.
During the signing ceremony, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the critical nature of the bill in the transformation of Lagos into a global city characterized by reliable and uninterrupted power supply.
In November, the Lagos State Government invited independent power producers and energy solutions companies to submit proposals for the development of gas-fired power plants to address the state’s ongoing electricity deficiency.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in collaboration with the Office of Public-Private Partnerships, issued the invitation for this initiative to elevate Lagos’s power supply through the Clean Lagos Electricity Market.
The announcement was jointly made by the Commissioner of the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, and the Special Adviser of the Office of Public-Private Partnerships, Bukola Odoe.
