Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has stated that the proposed Lagos Tenancy Bill is designed to foster fairness, transparency, and balance between landlords and tenants, while resolving persistent disputes in the state’s housing sector.
Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry, the governor explained that the bill — currently before the Lagos State House of Assembly — seeks to modernise tenancy laws and strengthen rental agreements to prevent exploitation or arbitrary evictions.
“Everyone aspires to be a landlord, but tenants must also be able to live decently and pay rent without undue pressure. The bill promotes a partnership where landlords can earn fairly, and tenants are treated justly,”
Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor added that ongoing initiatives like the rent-to-own and rent-to-live schemes are already helping Lagos residents move toward home ownership, and the new law will provide a clearer legal framework to sustain these efforts.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to affordable and inclusive housing, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while emphasizing collaboration with the private sector and local communities.
“The tenancy bill represents a balanced approach — one that allows government, landlords, and tenants to thrive together,” he concluded.
