Tammy Abraham scored a late winner as AC Milan recovered from two goals down to overcome defending champions Inter Milan 3-2 and won the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh on Monday.
Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi scored either side of halftime in Saudi Arabia, seemingly securing Inter’s fourth successive victory.
However, Milan came from the break rejuvenated, similar to their 2-1 comeback victory over Juventus in the semi-finals.
Inter’s situation worsened when the Serie A winners lost Hakan Calhanoglu to a muscular injury soon after the half-hour mark. Kristjan Asllani took his place.
Theo Hernandez gave Milan hope, scoring a free kick in the 52nd minute, as they sought their first trophy under new coach Sergio Conceicao. The US winger Christian Pulisic scored the equalizer with 10 minutes remaining, and English striker Abraham sealed the win with a goal in the 93rd minute. Milan claimed the trophy for the eighth time, their first since 2016.
Inter, the three-time defending champions, had earlier defeated Atalanta 2-0 in the Super Cup semi-finals, held in Saudi Arabia for the third consecutive year.
AC Milan’s eighth Italian Super Cup victory ties them with Inter and leaves them just behind Juventus, who have won the tournament a record nine times.
