A former presidential candidate and social activist, Omoyele Sowore, has been afforded bail in the amount of ₦10 million, contingent upon the provision of one surety of equivalent financial standing.
As reported by Channels TV, the surety is mandated to be a reputable individual possessing real estate of commensurate value and is obliged to present the original documentation of the property, alongside a passport photograph, to the court registrar.
Justice Musa Liman, who presided over the deliberation regarding the bail application, additionally mandated that he surrender his international passport to the court.
He was allotted a 24-hour period to satisfy the bail conditions or face detention in police custody.
This judicial determination followed the court’s postponement of its ruling on his bail application until Thursday (the present day), subsequent to the presentations made by Sowore’s legal representative, Marshall Abubakar, and the prosecution’s counsel, Udey Jonathan.
Sowore, who is confronted with 17 counts of cybercrime allegations instituted by the Nigerian Police, has entered a plea of not guilty to these accusations.
The allegations originate from a purported tweet by Sowore in which he characterized the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the “illegal IGP.”
The police assert that the assertion was erroneous and designed to provoke public unrest.
Sowore’s legal counsel had implored the court to grant bail under more lenient conditions, whereas the prosecution countered, advocating for rigorous stipulations to ensure his attendance at trial.
