A father in Pakistan fatally killed his adolescent daughter subsequent to her posting what he deemed to be inappropriate videos on TikTok, as reported by law enforcement authorities on Thursday.
The individual, reportedly in his fifties, had recently returned with his family from the United States to establish residence in the South-Western Pakistani city of Quetta, as stated by local police chief, Babar Baloch.
The father, who is currently in police custody, admitted to having fatally shot his daughter earlier this week after she declined to adopt a more modest mode of dress and to cease uploading content that the family characterized as “indecent” on TikTok, according to Baloch.
Law enforcement officials are categorizing the incident as an instance of what is referred to as honour killing.
Approximately 1,000 women are murdered in Pakistan by close kin, including fathers, brothers, and sons, under the justification of preserving family honour, as reported by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
In most instances, the perpetrators evade legal repercussions due to a contentious Islamic provision in the legal framework that permits the victim’s relatives to absolve the offender, as indicated by the rights organization Amnesty International.
In 2016, Pakistan enacted legislation aimed at partially abolishing the contentious provision; however, this has proven insufficient in curtailing the ongoing practice, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
