Neymar Jr has finally disclosed the reasons for his departure from Barcelona in the 2017/18 season.
His move to Paris Saint-Germain had been shrouded in speculation for a long time.
In a recent interview with Brazilian football legend Romario, Neymar explained the true motivations behind his decision to leave the Catalan club.
Signing with Barcelona from Santos FC in the 2013/14 season for a record transfer fee of $90 million, Neymar quickly rose to become one of the top players in the world.
However, after four successful years at Barcelona, he surprised fans by announcing his move to PSG, leaving many questioning his reasons for making such a significant change.
“I didn’t leave Barça to be the best in the world at PSG,” he told Romario.
“Messi told me: why are you leaving? Do you want to be the best player in the world? I can make you the best player in the world.
“I told him no. It’s not that. It’s something personal. Obviously financially, it was better than what I had at Barcelona… and there were Brazilians there too.
“I wanted to play with the Brazilians. There was Thiago Silva, Dani Alves just signed, Marquinhos, Lucas Moura. They were all my friends.”
