Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female African artist to have a song reach 1 billion streams on Spotify.
Her collaboration with Future and Drake on the hit song ‘Wait For U’ crossed the 1 billion streams mark on Spotify.
Originally released in 2022, ‘Wait For U’ samples Tems’ song ‘Higher’ from her EP ‘For Broken Ears’ (2020).
The track topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its debut, making Tems the first African artist to achieve this feat.
The success of ‘Wait For U’ led to two Grammy Award nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, for Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance, with the latter being the category they won.
