The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reassured corps members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, March 24, 2025, that the backlog of their newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance will be paid by the Federal Government (FG).
In September 2024, the FG announced an increase in corps members’ allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000.
Despite this announcement, the implementation of the new payment structure has been delayed for several months, causing concern and criticism from corps members.
Minister Olawande stated that all current and former corps members who were in the scheme at the time of the announcement will receive their payments retroactively, addressing the frustrations of those who have completed or are nearing the end of their service year.
“You saw the new DG saying that you will get it, and they’re asking him a question: ‘What about those that are going out now? Are they going to receive it [backlog]?’ He said, ‘We have your details,’” Olawande stated.
He further assured that while the payment might not be immediate, the government is committed to ensuring that all affected corps members receive their entitled backlog.
Despite the assurance, no specific timeline was given for the payment.
