It has been formally announced that Stormzy will be one of eight esteemed individuals conferred with honorary doctorates by Cambridge University in the year 2025.
The University Council has put forth the nominations for all eight honorees, who are scheduled to be officially recognized during a special Congregation in the Senate-House on Wednesday, the 25th of June, under the auspices of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice.
This distinguished ceremony will be attended by faculty, students, alumni, and specially invited dignitaries.
This marks Stormzy’s second honorary doctorate, following his first from Exeter University in 2022, where he was “honoured in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of higher education philanthropy and widening participation.”
In June, Stormzy is set to be awarded a Doctorate in Law from Cambridge University in acknowledgment of his significant philanthropic contributions across the domains of education, music, sports, and literature.
In 2018, he inaugurated the Stormzy Scholarship at Cambridge, which provides financial assistance to two Black British students each year by covering their tuition and maintenance expenses.
In 2021, the initiative experienced substantial expansion subsequent to HSBC UK’s agreement to facilitate support for an additional ten students annually.
To date, a total of 55 students have availed themselves of the Stormzy Scholarship, with the most substantial cohort thus far anticipated to graduate in 2025.
His endeavors have been extensively recognized for fostering an increase in applications to Cambridge from Black students throughout the UK, a phenomenon often referred to as the ‘Stormzy Effect.’
Other distinguished recipients include Sir Simon Russell Beale, Professor Angela Davis, Lady Arden of Heswall, Dame Katherine Grainger, Sir Oliver Hart, Maria Leptin, and Sir John Rutter.
