Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage has opened up about why she has been reluctant to sign new artists under her label. She cites the immense responsibility and stress that come with managing talent.
In a recent interview with Forbes Africa, the Water & Garri hitmaker shared that while many expect her to mentor and sign upcoming musicians, she does not feel she possesses the right “gift” to take on such a role.
According to Tiwa, overseeing an artist’s career is demanding and often involves unpredictable challenges. She noted that artists can be difficult to manage, and she does not want to be constantly caught up in controversies beyond her control.
“Everyone always says to me, ‘When are you going to sign an artiste?’ I don’t think I have the gift to sign another artiste, because artistes are stressful. I could just be sleeping, and then I will wake up and my artist is trending for something else,” she explained.
Despite her reservations, Tiwa actively explores alternative ways to support emerging artists. One of her key initiatives is establishing a music school, where aspiring musicians can develop their craft and refine their skills in a structured environment.
She believes this approach will help new talents flourish independently before they sign with a label that can provide them with the necessary resources and industry expertise.
“But I do have the gift to help, which is why I am trying to do the music school, where you can go and later sign to a label that can actually help you,” she added.
Tiwa Savage’s vision highlights her commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists, even if it’s not through direct management or label signings.
