Reports indicate that a man was shot by the US Secret Service after an armed confrontation took place in close proximity to the White House in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident, which occurred just minutes away from the White House at the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW, caused concern as law enforcement responded to a potential threat.
DC police had previously issued warnings about a “suicidal individual” who may have been travelling from Indiana, leading authorities to locate the man’s vehicle.
The car was located near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which sits adjacent to the White House.
According to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, when officers approached the vehicle, the suspect “brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel.”
“Thankfully, no injuries were reported among Secret Service agents.”
The man was taken to hospital following the shooting, but his current condition remains unclear.
“The status of the individual is currently unknown,” the Secret Service confirmed.
The incident, which occurred during a weekend when President Trump was not at the White House, is under investigation.
The President is currently staying at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.
The Secret Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
