NFF reacts to rumours of Eric Chelle’s resignation

New Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle to arrive Sunday with three assistants

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) refutes rumors that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is contemplating resigning from his position.

Speculation arose following claims by journalist Osasu Obayiuwana that Chelle was considering stepping down due to concerns about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Obayiuwana stated, “Sources within the NFF say that uncertainty over his fate beyond the FIFA World Cup qualifying series has led to a dramatic change of heart. The NFF will hold a crisis meeting to address the matter.”

Currently, Nigeria is in fourth place in Group C of the qualifiers, with seven points from six matches, behind South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin Republic. This raises the stakes for Chelle to improve the team’s performance and secure their spot in the tournament.

However, Ademola Olajire, the NFF’s Head of Communication, dismissed the claims, stating, “This is an April Fool’s prank by Osasu Obayiuwana.”

Reports also alleged that Chelle had traveled to Europe for scouting and planned to discuss his future with the NFF.

However, the NFF has reassured its support for Chelle, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
