Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Targets Historic Real Madrid Role

New Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle to arrive Sunday with three assistants

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed a bold long-term ambition: to become the first African to manage Real Madrid, describing it as the ultimate milestone in his coaching career.

The Malian-born tactician made the declaration in an interview with RMC Sport, saying the Spanish giants represent the peak of European club football.

“My dream is to become the first African coach to manage Real Madrid,” Chelle said.

Chelle’s profile has risen following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a campaign that drew praise for his tactical discipline and squad management amid intense pressure. Observers say his ambition reflects the growing recognition of African coaches on the global stage.

In the same interview, Chelle reflected on key moments from the tournament, including squad dynamics and reported tensions involving Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, as well as lessons learned from steering a high-profile national team.

He also revisited the viral “water bottle” incident from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations while he was coaching Mali—a moment that earned him the nickname “Waterman” after he collapsed near the bench during a dramatic quarter-final loss to Ivory Coast.

Addressing the incident on the After Afrique podcast, Chelle clarified it was linked to a serious health issue.

“I was feeling faint,” he said, explaining that he suffered from atrial fibrillation during the tournament.

“My heart was beating at 200 beats per minute… I had dizziness and fainting spells. After the match, I needed to catch my breath; I was about to faint. The physiotherapist put water on my head to keep me awake.”

Chelle confirmed he underwent heart surgery after the tournament and reassured fans that his condition has significantly improved.

With his health stabilized and his reputation growing, Chelle says his focus remains on building success step by step—while keeping an eye on what he calls his ultimate dream: leading Real Madrid.
