Unions representing staff under the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have temporarily suspended their nationwide strike action for two weeks, following high-level negotiations with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The industrial action, which disrupted flight operations nationwide—including the temporary grounding of Air Peace Airlines—was called off on Thursday after a resolution meeting in Abuja.
President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Uzor Oluchi, confirmed the development in a statement to The PUNCH.
“We have suspended the strike by 12:00 midnight for two weeks, and after two weeks have passed and nothing is done about our demands, we will start again,” Oluchi stated.
NiMet staff had downed tools to protest poor working conditions, citing key grievances such as:
-
Non-implementation of the new national minimum wage
-
Exclusion of some staff from previously approved allowances
-
Neglect of vital staff training and development programs
While the strike has been paused, union leaders have made it clear that the suspension is only temporary and conditional upon visible action from the government within the agreed timeframe.
Airlines and aviation operators are expected to resume full operations following the suspension, bringing relief to affected passengers nationwide.
