Months after suffering a medical incident, T.D. Jakes has announced he is stepping down from his leadership role at The Potter’s House church, passing the torch to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts.
The 67-year-old bishop, revered worldwide, confirmed he experienced a heart attack while preaching in November 2024.
Although he did not specifically cite health concerns in his statement, many observers note the timing aligns closely with his recent medical challenges.
In a heartfelt announcement, Jakes emphasized that the transition has been years in the making, pointing to milestones such as the 2022 conclusion of Woman, Thou Art Loosed and the rise of Woman Evolve, as well as the installation of two new assistant pastors in 2023.
“Today marks the continuation of our willingness to evolve as a church and step into broader roles to meet the needs of this sensitive moment in our collective history,” Jakes shared.
He highlighted the pressing societal, economic, and spiritual challenges facing younger generations and the need for both youth and elders to work together for change.
As Sarah and Touré assume greater responsibilities leading the daily ministry at The Potter’s House, Jakes will focus on expanding the T.D. Jakes Group, advancing initiatives around job creation, community investment, and workforce readiness nationwide.
Closing his message, Jakes called for unity:
“Together, we shall unite for the betterment of this generation and the ones that follow.”
