The USS Harry S. Truman, stationed in the Red Sea, has reported the loss of a fighter jet from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136 and a tow tractor.
According to a statement from the United States Navy on Monday, all personnel have been safely located, with only one sailor sustaining a minor injury.
The missing fighter jet, an F/A-18E Super Hornet, was being towed in the hangar bay when control was lost by the move crew.
Fortunately, the sailors involved in towing the aircraft quickly reacted and moved out of harm’s way before the jet plunged into the ocean.
An investigation is now underway to uncover the cause of the incident on the aircraft carrier, which is named after the 33rd President of the United States.
“The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group and embarked air wing remain fully mission capable,” the statement added.
The group comprises the Harry S. Truman, nine squadrons of Carrier Air Wing 1, the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64), and three guided-missile destroyers of Destroyer Squadron 28.
