Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen appoint Ten Hag as head coach

Erik ten Hag Has been Sacked, Ruud van Nistelrooy will replace him as interim head coach

Bayer Leverkusen have named former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, succeeding Xabi Alonso.

The 55-year-old Dutchman has agreed to a deal that will keep him at the Bundesliga club until June 2027.

Ten Hag takes over a squad that finished as runners-up to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and reached the semi-finals of the German Cup, following a season in which Alonso had led them to victory in both competitions.

Alonso departed to become head coach of Real Madrid, stepping in for Carlo Ancelotti, who now manages the Brazil national team.

This marks Ten Hag’s first role since being sacked by Manchester United in October 2024.

During his two-and-a-half-year tenure at Old Trafford, he secured two domestic cup titles but was let go after United endured their worst start to a season, losing four of their first nine league matches.
