Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has characterized Nigeria as a challenging environment for individuals determined to lead with integrity and uphold what is right.
During a special thanksgiving service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Umuahia—held in celebration of Governor Alex Otti’s two years in office—Obi encouraged Nigerians to continually pray for their leaders, especially those striving to lead ethically.
“It is difficult to govern Nigeria, especially when you want to do it right,” Peter Obi said. “Continue to remember the Governor and his team in prayers. Do the same for Nigeria; that God should touch the hearts of our leaders to use public money for public good. It is not our money—we are only trustees.”
He commended Governor Otti’s leadership, noting that it stands out as a departure from the conventional way of governance.
Peter Obi emphasized that meaningful transformation does not always require a long time, but rather, genuine intention and dedication.
“We have come to celebrate two years with a difference. People always say they need eight or ten years to make a change, but I have always said that one day can make a difference. In Abia, everyone can see the change—you don’t need the radio or someone to tell you,” he added.
Reiterating his dedication to national development, Peter Obi stated:
“I’m not desperate to be President. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work. We want future leaders like Governor Otti.”
In his address, Governor Otti attributed the achievements of his administration to divine favor.
Referring to 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, he said:
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase. We’ve all worked hard, but nothing would have come out of it if God didn’t back us. That’s why we return all thanks to Him.”
He expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the legislative and judicial arms, as well as his team, describing their input as vital to the progress of “the new Abia project.”
Governor Otti also appreciated Obi for his consistent support, referring to him as “a shining example of good governance.”
The thanksgiving event drew attendees from various sectors including government, politics, religious institutions, and the general public from across Abia State.
