Award-winning singer Adekunle Gold has unveiled a new initiative to support individuals living with sickle cell disease in Nigeria. The project, called 5 Star Care, will provide free health insurance coverage to 1,000 sickle cell warriors in Lagos State.
The initiative was announced on Thursday in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), and the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, as part of activities marking the 2025 World Sickle Cell Day.
Taking to Instagram, the singer, who has openly shared his personal battle with sickle cell, wrote:
“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative; it’s a promise. A promise to make sure that sickle cell warriors are seen, heard, and cared for. We’re starting small by providing free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos State. But this is only the beginning.”
The insurance scheme will cover routine healthcare, emergency treatment, and specialist consultations, granting beneficiaries full access to services under LASHMA’s platform.
Speaking further, the 37-year-old singer — born Adekunle Kosoko — said the programme reflects his lifelong commitment to support fellow sickle cell warriors.
“Our goal is to reach as many warriors as possible, across the country and beyond,” he stated.
Adekunle Gold first revealed his own struggles with the disorder in 2022, sharing how the illness nearly cost him his life as a child and shaped his drive to succeed and help others.
World Sickle Cell Day, observed every June 19, raises global awareness of sickle cell disease — a genetic blood disorder that affects millions worldwide — and advocates for improved treatment, care, and research.
With 5 Star Care, Adekunle Gold is taking a decisive step from advocacy to action, offering practical support to those living with the condition.
