The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant enhancement to the national grid, adding 5,910 MVA of transformer capacity through various ongoing and completed projects. This was disclosed by Aminu Tahir, General Manager, Project Coordination, and Technical Assistant to the MD/CEO, during a project status briefing under the Project Management Unit (PMU).
Tahir revealed that the PMU is currently overseeing projects financed by the World Bank, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the African Development Bank (AfDB). Additionally, the procurement process for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded Lagos and Ogun projects is nearing completion.
According to him, while some of the PMU projects have been completed, others are nearing 80% completion, contributing to the ongoing expansion and strengthening of the power transmission network nationwide.
In response to recent infrastructure challenges, TCN mobilised three contractors to execute emergency reconstruction works after windstorms destroyed several towers in Kebbi State. Unfortunately, during the repair efforts, another storm damaged three more towers at Galadima Village, Shanga Local Government Area, necessitating the swift engagement of additional contractors.
TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the affected transmission line was successfully restored and energised following intensive round-the-clock work by contractors and supervising engineers.
“We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of affected communities during the reconstruction period. TCN remains committed to ensuring the efficient and reliable transmission of bulk electricity to distribution load centres nationwide,” she stated.
The ongoing projects are expected to further enhance grid stability, reduce transmission losses, and improve power delivery across the country.
