The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed that it will not stand in the way if Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili decides to switch her sporting nationality.
Speaking to The Guardian, an AFN official stated that while the body regrets Ofili’s frustrations — particularly over her omission from the 100m event at the Paris 2024 Olympics — the athlete has the right to represent another country if she chooses.
However, under World Athletics regulations, Ofili would be required to observe a mandatory three-year waiting period before competing for her new nation.
“If she wants to switch nationality, we won’t stop her,” the official said. “But she’ll have to wait three years as per the rules.”
The AFN emphasized its commitment to structure and discipline within Nigerian athletics, noting that other rising stars are ready to step up.
“We have other talents coming up. No one is above the system,” the official added.
Ofili’s future remains a subject of speculation as she reportedly weighs her options following administrative lapses in Nigerian athletics.
