Barcelona has made a major breakthrough in its pursuit of Spanish winger Nico Williams, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming that the club has reached a full agreement on personal terms with the player.
According to the update, Williams has agreed to a deal that will keep him at Camp Nou until June 2031, with an annual net salary of €7–8 million. This development represents a crucial step for Barcelona, as they now shift their focus to striking a deal with his current club, Athletic Club.
Convincing the player was seen as the toughest hurdle, but Nico’s strong desire to join the Catalan side has accelerated negotiations. His agent has been in close contact with Barcelona’s board since last Friday, reaffirming the 21-year-old’s determination to wear the Blaugrana colours next season.
What impressed the Barcelona hierarchy most is the winger’s commitment to making the move happen. Despite Athletic reportedly offering him a lucrative renewal worth €10 million net per season—far higher than Barça’s proposal—Nico has accepted the Catalans’ offer and is even willing to reduce his salary demands to help the club comply with La Liga’s strict financial regulations.
His stance includes urging Athletic to negotiate a transfer fee rather than forcing Barcelona to activate his full release clause. The Spain international has even signalled his readiness to issue a public statement to facilitate the move if necessary.
Nevertheless, Athletic Club remains steadfast in its policy of only letting players leave when their release clauses are met—a stance that has frustrated many suitors in the past. However, fresh discussions have reportedly taken place in recent hours, with Barcelona also weighing the option of triggering Nico’s clause outright to secure the transfer.
As things stand, all eyes are now on negotiations between the two clubs to determine whether the high-profile switch can be finalised this summer.
