Chelsea have decided not to activate the £25 million permanent transfer clause in Jadon Sancho’s loan agreement. This move will see the Blues pay a £5 million penalty fee to Manchester United.
Sancho, who joined Chelsea on a season-long loan last summer, is set to return to Old Trafford on June 30 after both parties failed to reach an agreement on personal terms.
The 24-year-old winger scored five goals in 42 appearances and played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League victory, but wage issues ultimately scuttled the deal.
Wage Demands Clash with Chelsea’s Salary Structure
Despite his on-pitch contributions, Sancho’s £250,000-a-week wage demands clashed with Chelsea’s incentive-based salary model, and the club was unwilling to compromise. The decision signals a strategic shift by Chelsea, which is now focusing on more sustainable long-term targets.
Chelsea Pursuing Alternatives
Reports indicate that the club is now eyeing right-footed left-wingers, with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho identified as top priorities. While Nico Williams remains on the radar, the Spanish international is considered financially demanding, making a deal less likely unless conditions change.
Sancho to Miss FIFA Club World Cup
Sancho’s exit also confirms he will miss Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United States, despite being eligible. The decision further highlights the club’s commitment to overhauling its squad under new manager Enzo Maresca.
West Ham Enters the Picture
Meanwhile, West Ham United have reportedly entered the race for Sancho’s signature, with manager Graham Potter exploring fresh options during his squad rebuild at the London Stadium. A swap deal involving Mohammed Kudus has been discussed, which could see the Ghanaian attacker head to Manchester United in exchange.
