FG Cancels Democracy Day Parade as Tinubu Plans Nationwide Broadcast on June 12

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially canceled the traditional military parade scheduled to commemorate the 26th Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

According to a statement by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration, the event lineup has been revised. Instead of the usual parade, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 AM to mark the occasion.

Following the address, the President will participate in a special joint session of the National Assembly at 12:00 noon. This session will focus on the state of the nation, Nigeria’s democratic journey, and the need for renewed commitment to national unity and reforms.

Later in the day, a public lecture is scheduled for 4:00 PM at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. Themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms”, the event will host top government officials, political leaders, and civil society representatives to deliberate on the future of Nigeria’s democratic process.

The Federal Government urged all citizens to tune in to the broadcast and participate in national conversations that aim to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and governance reforms.
