Tech billionaire and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk has announced a major shift in the platform’s advertising policy—hashtags will no longer be allowed in ads starting June 27, 2025.
Musk revealed the update in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, writing:
“Starting tomorrow, the esthetic nightmare that is hashtags will be banned from ads on ,” the Tesla and SpaceX CEO stated.
This change comes months after Musk first hinted at his distaste for hashtags back in December 2024. At the time, he encouraged users to ditch them altogether, citing growing evidence that posts without hashtags were performing better in terms of reach.
While hashtags have long served as a tool for discoverability and categorization on the platform, Elon Musk appears to be pushing for a more refined visual experience.
Reactions have been mixed, but many X users are hailing the move as a game changer. Some praised the decision for contributing to a “cleaner” and “classier” feed, aligning with Musk’s ongoing vision to reinvent the social media space.
