Tech billionaire Elon Musk has ignited fresh controversy after claiming that deaths across Africa declined following deep cuts to United States foreign aid, arguing that the reductions curbed instability rather than worsened humanitarian conditions.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the remarks while defending the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the cost-cutting initiative that supported significant reductions in funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
In a post on X, Musk argued that mortality did not increase after the funding reductions and suggested that the cuts prevented programmes he believes contributed to political instability.
“Deaths in Africa DECREASED after USAID funding was cut, because they’re no longer able to push for violent revolution to install leftist regimes!” Musk wrote.
His comments have since triggered widespread debate, with supporters praising the government’s efforts to reduce spending, while critics questioned the basis of his claims.
The remarks come after a dramatic reduction in U.S. humanitarian assistance.
According to Refugees International, U.S. humanitarian aid fell from approximately $14 billion in 2024 to $3.7 billion in 2025. Separately, the Center for Global Development estimated that overall USAID spending declined by about 58% during the same period.
The funding reductions affected a wide range of programmes, including food assistance, health services and emergency humanitarian operations across several countries.
Musk’s comments have drawn criticism from humanitarian organizations and public health experts, who argue that it is too early—and too simplistic—to conclude that aid cuts reduced mortality across Africa.
Researchers have warned that disruptions to healthcare, nutrition and disease-prevention programmes could have long-term consequences that may not yet be reflected in national mortality statistics. Earlier analyses have also linked reductions in foreign aid to potential increases in preventable deaths if funding is not restored.
The debate highlights the continuing divide over the Trump administration’s foreign aid policies and the role of DOGE in reshaping U.S. government spending.
As discussions continue, Musk’s remarks have once again placed the future of American foreign assistance at the centre of global political and humanitarian conversations.
