Nicki Minaj is once again making headlines, but this time it has nothing to do with music.
The Grammy-nominated rapper is facing another legal dispute after court documents were reportedly left at the gate of her California residence as part of a lawsuit seeking more than $229,000 for alleged unpaid legal fees.
The lawsuit was filed by the law firm Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani LLP, which claims Minaj owes $229,541 for legal services provided in a copyright infringement case involving her 2014 song, “I Lied.”
According to court filings, the firm represented the rapper in the copyright dispute, which was resolved through a confidential settlement late last year. However, the attorneys now allege they have not been paid for the legal work they carried out on Minaj’s behalf.
The law firm filed its lawsuit earlier this year and is now seeking a default judgment, arguing that the rapper failed to respond by the court-imposed deadline.
A default judgment is typically requested when a defendant does not file a response to a lawsuit within the prescribed timeframe.
If granted, the court may rule in favour of the plaintiff without the case proceeding to a full trial. However, defendants can sometimes ask the court to set such judgments aside under certain circumstances.
The reported delivery of court papers to Minaj’s home marks another development in a series of legal challenges involving the rap superstar in recent months.
In a separate dispute, a production company sued Minaj for $275,000, alleging unpaid expenses connected to an iHeartRadio Jingle Ball performance. The company claims it incurred costs that were never reimbursed.
Minaj has denied personal responsibility for those expenses, maintaining that she should not be held liable for the disputed payments.
The rapper has also been involved in another legal matter brought by a former security guard.
That case resulted in a default judgment exceeding $500,000 after Minaj reportedly failed to respond during the legal process. According to reports, she later satisfied the judgment before additional enforcement measures could be taken against her property.
The latest lawsuit adds to a growing list of legal matters surrounding the award-winning artist this year. However, it is important to note that a court has not yet determined the claims regarding unpaid legal fees.
